Chief Executive Officer, Motif FoodWorks, Inc.
Dr. Jonathan McIntyre, Ph.D., joined Motif FoodWorks in February 2019 as Chief Executive Officer and member of the board of directors. Motif is a Boston-based ingredient innovation company focused on unleashing the promise of plant-based foods by helping to make them better tasting, more nutritious and so desirable that people crave them. Motif partners with food and nutrition companies of all sizes and is pioneering a ‘whole science’ approach that combines insights and technology in novel ways to get new, better answers, benefiting everyone and our planet. Immediately prior to joining Motif, Dr. McIntyre served as Head of Research and Development at Indigo Agriculture, Inc. In this role Dr. McIntyre was responsible for developing microbial seed treatments to replace or reduce chemical inputs and increase crop yields with desirable attributes during periods of biotic or abiotic stress. During this period Dr. McIntyre served as a Board Director for Kaleido Biosciences Inc., a clinical stage healthcare company with a differentiated, chemistry driven approach focused on leveraging the potential of the microbiome to treat disease and improve human health.
Previously, Dr. McIntyre served as Senior Vice President of Research & Development at PepsiCo from 2009 to 2017, driving innovation and developing products across Global Snacks and Beverage categories, leading a diverse team of food scientists, process & packaging engineers, culinary chefs and sensory specialists. As head of beverage R&D he led a comprehensive transformation of the product portfolio including: the complete redesign of all brand packaging (PepsiCo CSDs, Lipton, Starbucks RTD, Gatorade & Tropicana); the reformulation of Lipton Pure Leaf Tea; the launch of new fountain equipment; and the shift to lower sugar formulations across the portfolio. Similarly, as Global Snacks R&D, Dr. McIntyre drove important advances of PepsiCo’s sustainability programs, developing compostable thin film packaging technology; reducing salt & fat in snacks; introducing veggie and protein forward snacks all while expanding the core portfolio.
Prior to PepsiCo, Dr. McIntyre served as Senior Vice President of Technology & Innovation at Solae, LLC, a DuPont Foods & Nutrition company, where he led R&D, quality, regulatory and technology licensing for the world’s largest plant protein company. At Solae he focused his teams on building up novel application, improving ingredient offerings for higher margin food formulas and improving the cost structure for higher volume lower margin commodity ingredients.
Prior to Solae, Dr. McIntyre served as the Chief of Development Technology & Operations at Auxeris Therapeutics Inc. where he supported the development of its lead candidates for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and bone metastases.
Dr. McIntyre began his career at Monsanto, as a discovery researcher at GD Searle working on drugs for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, he then transferred to the NutraSweet division where he led product development for new food ingredients. In this role Dr. McIntyre assumed the role of Chief Scientist at Monsanto Protein Technologies (MPT), a contract manufacturing business using biotechnology to engineer plants to produce protein therapeutics.
Dr. McIntyre is a highly credentialed scientist, he served as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board at Anaptys Biosciences, Inc. and is a member of numerous professional societies including American Chemical Society, Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. McIntyre is a Commissioner on the Council of Competitiveness, a group of corporate CEOs, university presidents and labor leaders committed to the future prosperity of all Americans and enhanced U.S. competitiveness in the global economy through the creation of high-value economic activity in the United States.
Dr. McIntyre earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Grove City College and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed post-doctoral training in Cell Biology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Jon currently lives in Boston and when he isn’t transforming the world of food, he enjoys finding balance through his yoga practice and experimenting in the kitchen with plant-based food creations.
